CSEA Local 436

Dear CSEA Family,
Blitz News: A Call to Action - Join our next blitz!
I am excited for next week’s blitz in Ulster County. From Tuesday, June 3 to Saturday, June 7, we will be hitting the road, making home visits, and stopping by worksites to talk with members face-to-face. It’s about having conversations, building unity and hearing from the members.

The weather forecast looks great (hoping it stays that way!). If you can join us, we will be happy to have you. If you are interested, contact AnneMarie Raymond in the Membership Department, annemarie.raymond@cseainc.org or call 518-257-1278.
Troubling SCOTUS Decision
Late last week, the U.S. Supreme Court issued a ruling that allows the Trump administration to remove members of the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) and the Merit Systems Protection Board (MSPB), even as legal challenges continue. While the ruling doesn't grant permanent authority for such removals without cause, it effectively permits them for now.

This is deeply troubling. Existing law requires that board members can only be removed for cause—a critical protection for agency independence. No cause was given in these cases, yet the Court’s decision signals a shift that could undermine long-standing safeguards and the bi-partisan makeup of these boards.

CSEA is extremely concerned about the precedent this sets and the potential weakening of independent oversight in federal labor and civil service matters. We will continue to monitor the situation closely.
State Legislative Session
The State Legislature has approximately three weeks left in the 2025 legislative session. CSEA continues to lobby the legislature to pass key legislation, including increased health and safety protections, civil service reforms, job protections from Artificial Intelligence, and new tools to recruit and retain employees. To see some of the issues that we are working on in the final days of the session, you can go to the CSEA Issues page OR sign up here for “This Week in Albany.”
June is National Safety Month
With June right around the corner, it's a great time to recognize National Safety Month, an annual campaign led by the National Safety Council (NSC) to promote safety and prevent injuries and deaths at work, at home, and in the community. Each week in June focuses on a specific theme to encourage awareness and action: 2025 Weekly Safety Topics:
• Week 1 (June 1–7): Continuous Improvement
• Week 2 (June 8–14): Employee Engagement
• Week 3 (June 15–21): Roadway Safety
• Week 4 (June 22–30): Wellbeing
The NSC provides free resources, training, and materials to help individuals and organizations strengthen their safety practices. This is effort to raise awareness and reduce the risks of preventable injuries and fatalities across all environments.

DID YOU KNOW?
Did you know Workplace injuries cost U.S. employers over $167 billion annually? One important distinction is union workplaces are statistically far safer than non-union ones. That’s because union members have stronger protections, better training, and the power to raise safety concerns without fear of retaliation. Your union contract is one of your most powerful safety tools. Know it. Use it. And never hesitate to speak up for a safer workplace.
Regional News:

Syracuse Mets Lost, but CSEA Members Win
Central Region 5 hosted a CSEA Day at the Syracuse Mets on May 18 as part of Member Appreciation Month! Lots of fun had by all despite the cold and wet weather. Central Region 3rd Vice President Andy Maroney threw the ceremonial first pitch and Central Region Executive Vice President Chantalise DeMarco and Syracuse Area Retirees Local President Kathy Zabinski crushed it on the broadcast. Unfortunately, the Mets lost 8-6 to the Lehigh Valley IronPigs. Visit the region’s Facebook page for photos.

North Country Advocacy
CSEA Clinton County Local President Cindy Gallicchio and local 2nd Vice President Bill Wells recently met with Assemblyman Billy Jones in Plattsburgh to discuss key end-of-session priorities. At the top of the list: enhanced safety protections for DSS employees and caseload caps. DSS workers are facing increased threats on the job, and it’s time New York strengthens protections and holds aggressors accountable. We’re also calling for reasonable caseload limits to prevent burnout and ensure quality services for vulnerable New Yorkers. View pictures here.

CSEA Long Island Region One Hosts Annual Memorial Day Ceremony
The CSEA Long Island Region One Veterans Committee held their annual Memorial Day Ceremony, which honors members of the military who gave their lives while in service. Every year, the committee holds the ceremony at the gravesite of someone affiliated with CSEA. This year’s event was held in honor of the grandfather of CSEA Patchogue-Medford School District Operational Unit President Peter Starken and CSEA South Country School District Head Custodian Frank Ellis. Starken shared anecdotes about his grandfather while his relatives and CSEA family looked on. View photos from the event.
